Superintendent's Update

July 8, 2020

Dear Lynwood Unified Community,

I hope that this message finds you enjoying the summer and your loved ones. As we move closer to the 2020-21 school year, I would like to address the evolving plans for how we will serve students this fall.

This week, school districts met with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health to receive updated guidance for our schools. The Department of Public Health will release guidelines for reopening schools by the end of this week, and as a district, we will strictly adhere to the LA County Department of Public Health guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety. Additionally, LA County has seen an increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases, and for now, Lynwood Unified will continue planning to reopen our schools via distance learning until we hear otherwise from the LA County Department of Public Health. In the meantime, we continue working with our three associations: Classified Schools Employees Association, Lynwood Teachers Association, and School Employees International Union through our Reconstitution Task Force team to ensure we have proper guidelines in place for a restart. This includes plans for sanitizing our schools, transportation, communication protocols, and learning tools, as well as monitoring the health of students and staff.

We are also in the process of providing more laptops and electronic devices to help families achieve success in distance learning. This will include internet hotspot service for online access. We are committed to equipping our community with the tools it needs to thrive in the midst of all obstacles.

Lynwood Unified is deeply committed to our students and continual improvement in our principles of equity, access, and justice. Despite our progress, we recognize that we have much work ahead of us and we cannot do it alone. We recently met with students and staff and have obtained feedback from parents regarding our stance against injustice. As your superintendent, I believe that we have an incredible opportunity to reflect on our practices to better serve our students and community. Personally, there were many things that I did not learn until I was in college, and I strongly believe that our students should not have to wait until they get to college to learn about social justice and social change movements. Our Board has already adopted policies to enhance our curriculum by incorporating the diverse narratives and perspectives of minority and underrepresented groups. However, these cannot be limited to a single month out of the year, or only be restricted to English or social studies. There is a need to be intentional across different grade levels and disciplines. If you are interested in helping us revisit our curriculum to enhance what our students learn, please call (310) 886-1600, extension 8132, or send an email to: lusdequity@mylusd.org.

We are nearing the conclusion of our summer school programs and I have been inspired by the dedication and resilience of our educators and young learners. No matter what challenges may be ahead, I know that we will continue to collaborate to ensure this community remains successful.

Thank you for continuing to support us as we work to serve you.

Sincerely,

Gudiel R. Crosthwaite, Ph.D.
